Cyprus Ski Report, Tuesday, February 8th, 2005 - Rolandos Constantinides

Hi Jay,

Thirty inches of snow over the last 72 hours. 40 inches at the stake of Mt
Olympus, more on the North Face trails. Temperatures have been below
freezing above 3000ft for the last three days. Temperatures at the ski
resort hover between -8 and -12 C. It has started to snow again as I write
this anywhere above 2500ft. Just imagine all the powder. And what's the
deal??? "All roads to Troodos closed to all vehicles" since Monday, with
police blocks turning you back. How am I going to enjoy the new snow other
than looking at it from afar????????????????

Oh well. There was some significant snow in late January, the stake reaching
20 inches (and again with complete road closures), followed by a major
warmup with temps reaching 12C on the slopes. I did manage a morning of
skiing before a nightshift at the beginning of the warmup, with about 15
inches of base (which was reduced to 10 inches until last weekend). It was
nice corn snow, very enjoyable, but off-piste was rather bad. I did though
enjoy every second of it.

I have included photos from that morning trip, as well as a couple of shots
from my attempt to get there on Tuesday, when there was a spell of better
weather. You can see the Mt Olympus massif as seen from about 15km (on a
direct line) from the east, and also a shot of the forested road I took at
3000ft before being turned back due to the closed road....

I'm also thinking about buying new skis myself. My choice here is quite
limited, being practically only Rossignol or Atomic. I will do a bit of
research, but I am more into Atomics because the imported is more
trustworthy. Any suggestions on a good carver model to be mainly used on
groomed trails? I have to admit that I haven't yet started my research into
what's available, I hope to manage a trip to the store next week (it is
situated in Limassol about 100Km away).

Hope you keep having fun on the snow!

Rolandos
